The Role

The Centre for Social Justice is seeking a Head of Addiction to work in our busy Westminster office. This senior role is crucial in efforts to tackle poverty and social breakdown across the UK.

The successful candidate will lead the CSJ's Addiction Unit and be in charge of delivering high quality, relevant research and campaigns. The purpose of the Unit is to help prevent drug and alcohol addiction in the UK and ensure that everyone, no matter what their background, is given the support necessary to tackle their addiction, successfully enter recovery and make the most of their potential. While experience and knowledge of the addiction sector is preferable, we will consider excellent candidates from other backgrounds who fit the skills profile of the role.

Established in 2004, the Centre for Social Justice is an independent think tank that studies the root causes of Britain's acute social problems, and aims to address them through recommending to government practical, workable policy interventions. The CSJ's vision is to give people in the UK who are experiencing the worst multiple disadvantage and issues of injustice, every possible opportunity to reach their full potential.

The majority of the CSJ's policy work is organised around five pathways to poverty, first identified in our ground-breaking 2007 report, Breakthrough Britain. These are: family breakdown; educational failure; economic dependency and worklessness; addiction to drugs and alcohol; severe personal debt. In March 2013, the CSJ report It Happens Here, shone a light on the horrific reality of human trafficking and modern slavery in the UK. This report led to the passing of the Modern Slavery Act, which gained Royal Assent in March 2015.

This role would suit a strategic individual, who is able to work well with a wide variety of senior stakeholders, and who is committed to and passionate about changing people's lives for the better. The particular characteristics we are most looking for are:

  • An engaging individual, who is able to work with, learn from and inspire a wide variety of stakeholders in and around the addiction sector
  • Someone with a strong strategic mind-set, able to clearly articulate plans both verbally and in writing
  • Someone who is able to design and undertake high-quality research and campaigns (relevant transferable skills and experiences will be considered alongside direct experience)
  • A commitment to excellence and high standards of professionalism
  • Well-organised, discrete, and with a high degree of personal integrity

The Head of Addiction will lead the CSJ's Addiction Unit. Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Planning and implementing the addiction research programme
  • Writing and editing content and preparing it for publication
  • Writing high-level policy documents, blogs and articles
  • Planning and implementing an effective campaign and networking strategy for the CSJ's addiction work
  • Managing an Addiction Advisory Board
  • Promoting the CSJ's research on national and local media
  • Supporting fundraising efforts for the Unit
  • Representing the CSJ externally and being an ambassador for its vision, mission, and values
  • Be part of the wider CSJ team seeking to tackle poverty in the United Kingdom
